When visiting our surgery you may be given a prescription for medication, by one of our healthcare professionals, as part of your treatment.
Prescriptions
Prescriptions are dispensed by a pharmacist, who can answer your questions on prescription and over-the-counter medicines. All community pharmacies provide the following services:
- dispensing of NHS prescriptions
- access to the repeat prescription service (with agreement from your GP)
- an emergency supply of medicine, subject to the decision of the pharmacist (you may need to pay for an emergency supply)
- non-prescription medicines like paracetamol
- disposal of unwanted or out-of-date medicines
- advice on treating minor health concerns and healthy living
You can:
- Use the electronic prescription service – when you get a prescription, it will be sent electronically to the dispenser you have chosen.
- you can choose a pharmacy for all your prescriptions, or
- you can decide each time where you would like to collect your prescription
- Take your paper copy prescription to a pharmacy of your choice
Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.
Repeat prescriptions
Patients requiring repeat medication will be given a repeat order form which will enable them to re-order their prescriptions in the following ways:

- You can access Medicines A to Z to find out how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.
- Contact your local pharmacist – experts in medicines who can help you with minor health concerns. As qualified healthcare professionals, they can offer clinical advice and over-the-counter medicines for a range of minor illnesses, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, tummy trouble and aches and pains.
Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment. Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.
